The first Palestinian company to achieve this feat National Beverage Company factory in Ramallah receives the International Certificate in Energy Management




 

Ramallah – Al Hayat Economic - The factory of the National Beverage Company Coca-Cola/Cappy (NBC) in Ramallah attained an international energy management certificate in accordance with the international standard ISO 50001:2018, to be the first achievement of its kind for a Palestinian company. The certification was earned for implementing many projects and environmental practices over the past period in translation of the principles and values ​​of the National Beverage Company.

The ISO 50001 Energy Management System is one of the international standards aiming at enabling organizations to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency and consumption, and to identify opportunities to reduce and rationalize energy consumption, based on the fulfillment of the legal requirements, in order to achieve the desired goal.  Such goal can be achieved by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the negative environmental impact caused by the unnecessary use of energy.

NBC’s General Manager Mr. Imad al-Hindi expressed his pride in this achievement, the first of its kind at the national level.  He praised the great efforts of the Company’s staff.  Mr. al-Hindi stated, “the Company is making huge efforts in managing and improving energy practices in its operations with high efficiency in order to reduce energy consumption without affecting the production process, in addition to working on the environmental aspects so that the Company ensures reducing carbon emissions and reducing solid waste, as well as working to recycle and reuse it in an environment friendly manner.

Mr. al-Hindi added that the Company took action to introduce several modern equipment and production machines with advanced technology in the various departments of the Company to control the energy consumption, reduce technical waste, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Mr. al-Hindi explained that NBC is committed to raising the capabilities and skills of the human resources in the Company so that it will be able to carry out its role as required in the field of energy and water provision and to exercise their role in the field of sustainability and development.  He noted that the role of NBC is played in partnership with official bodies and civil society institutions towards reaching an environmentally sound society. Mr. al-Hindi stressed the Company's continuous endeavor to develop its work processes, production and innovation, and to ensure a work environment that complies with Palestinian legal requirements and Coca-Cola Global standards.

The process of obtaining this international certificate for the National Beverage Company witnessed the fulfillment of many necessary requirements, namely identifying all energy consumables within the Company’s factory in Ramallah, studying such consumables and identifying the machines that consume the most energy in the Company. Ammonia gas is one of the most energy consuming systems in the factory, in addition to the packaging machines, forklifts and the boiler heating system, where many procedures and practices have been implemented in order to reach the expected reduction in energy consumption.

The National Beverage Company Coca-Cola/Cappy continuously endeavors to adhere to the local and international environmental standards that would ensure the best sound environmental conditions in the community.  In doing so, NBC has obtained many certificates in the field of environmental preservation and rationalization of energy consumption through its environmental management system and the establishment of a Photovoltaic plant to provide clean energy for its factory in Ramallah.  In addition, NBC has been working on supporting several projects that would enhance the environmental situation and raise awareness about it, such as sponsoring the “My Clean City” initiative to broadcast environmental awareness among school students and the entire Palestinian community.
