Ramallah: Concluding of the environmental awareness projects and announcing of the winning schools and students

Ramallah - Alayyam: Ramallah Municipality concluded the environmental awareness projects with the school students for the academic year 2016/2017 which are carried out for the 9th consecutive year for the students of the first primary grades, which include the program “Healthy and Environmentally Friendly Schools”. Further, the names of schools and students winners of the projects and competitions held under the program were announced.
Participants in the closing ceremony which was held at the municipal theatre yesterday included Bassem Erekat , Director of Ramallah and Al-Bireh Educational Directorate, Durgham Abdel Aziz, Manager of Education Office at Jerusalem and Jericho, Mr. Imad al-Hindi, General Manager of the National Beverage Company Coca-Cola/Cappy (NBC), schools’ principals, teachers, members of the steering committee of “Healthy and Environmentally Friendly  Schools” program, the environmental play competition, and Kamal Shamshoum and Gamal Awayseh, members of the Municipal Council, Ahmed Abu Laban, General Manager of Ramallah Municipality, and a number of the participating students.
In his speech on behalf of the Mayor of Ramallah, Kamal Shamshoum commended everyone who contributed to the success of the projects and he congratulated the participating schools. He expressed his wish that all schools adopt the “Healthy and Environmentally Friendly Schools” program as part of their annual activities and to work hand in hand with the educational community.
“Ramallah Municipality and its partners celebrate the efforts exerted by the schools which participated in the different projects, the supporting institutions, and the municipality teams” said Shamshoum. He also said that implementation of such projects year after year stems from the municipality’s faith that building an individual from the environmental and cultural aspects is not less important than building of the city and improving of its infrastructure.
Mr. Shamshoum noted that such project is distinguished because it targets the rising generation of school students as it covers several activities aiming at refining the environmental values embraced by the students and shedding the light on the day to day practices which harm the environment, as well as encouraging the students to come up with creative solutions for these problems and apply such solutions during their day to day life.
On his part, Mr. Imad al-Hindi, General Manager of NBC, said that such efforts and partnership contribute in achieving the sublime mission which aims at refining the students’ skills and advancing their innovation in the environmental and health issues, in cooperation with the educational community, Ministry of Education, Ramallah Municipality, and all the partners.  He added that NBC conducts many projects with the aim of protecting the environment by adopting the advanced environmental systems in all of its facilitates and plants to ensure supporting all the projects and initiatives which contribute to ensure decent living for the Palestinian people in healthy and safe environmental conditions.
During the ceremony, the environmental play competition was presented and Melvina El-Gamal, Director of Health & Environment Department, announced the winning schools based on the assessment conducted by the Steering Committee of the schools which participated in the “Healthy and Environmentally Friendly Schools” program for the academic year 2016/2017. Al-Mustaqbal Schools shared the first position with Houari Boumediene School, while Saint Joseph's Secondary School shared the second position with Aziz Shahin Secondary School. Saint George School shared the third position with Ramallah Primary School for Girls (UNRWA), while Ahleya College School shared the fourth place with Ramallah Secondary School for Girls.
Further, the schools which won the “Sustainable School” award were announced, namely Friends School for Girls, Faisal El-Hosseiny Primary School, and Ramallah Primary School for Boys (UNRWA) as these schools came in the first place for more than one year due to the continuity of their excellent performance and efforts in implementing the sustainable environmental and healthy activities.
The excellence award for this year was awarded to Martyr Ziad Abu Ein School which provided an excellent performance organizing a healthy and environmental day, Ein Menjd Primary School for Boys which was distinguished with introducing green areas, while the Greek Catholic School of Our Lady Annunciation, and Ein Mesbah Secondary School for Boys were awarded the Shield of Excellence in the program for this year.
Students Luna Hussein from the Ahleya College School and Saly Jaboury from Saint George’s School received the shield of the “most excellent student” in the environmental club. Haitham Housheih, a teacher in Ramallah Primary School for Boys (UNRWA), received the shield of “the most excellence teacher” in the environmental club.
The schools which won the environmental play competition were announced as Faisal El-Hosseiny Primary School came in the first place, Friends School for Girls came in the second place, while Saint George’s School shared the third place with Saint Joseph's Secondary School.
Awards were given to the excellent students who participated in the environmental play competition as student Grace El-Dalw from the Greek Catholic School of Our Lady Annunciation received the “best actor” award and student Waseem Edwin from Saint George School received an award. The excellent performance of the students Youri Hadid and Rashad El-Mimi from the Greek Catholic School of Our Lady Annunciation, student Yazn El-Shayeb from Ein Menjd Primary School for Boys, student Riyad Hantouli from Friends School for Girls, and student Aws Hammad from Ramallah Primary School for Boys (UNRWA) was noted.
The “Best Group Acting” Award was delivered to Ramallah Primary School for Girls (UNRWA) and the “best script” award was delivered to trainer Christen Hodly from Friends School for Girls and trainer Firas Abu Sabah from Saint Joseph's Secondary School. Trainer Christen Hodly received the “best director” award for Faisal El-Hosseiny Primary School and Friends School for Girls.
The Greek Catholic School of Our Lady Annunciation, Ahleya College School, and Ein Menjd Primary School for Boys were awarded the shield of the most cooperating school with the project.
The “Healthy and Environmentally Friendly Schools” program is implemented under the supervision of Ramallah and Al-Bireh Educational Directorate and the UNRWA and under the sponsorship of the National Beverage Company in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, World Health Organization, the Palestinian Water Authority, Ministry of National Economy, Environment Quality Authority, and the Palestinian Energy and Environment Research Center, in cooperation with the Palestinian Civil Defense Agency, Jerusalem Water Undertaking, MAAN Development Center, Joint Service Council for Solid Waste Management for the local authorities at Ramallah and Al-Bireh governorate, Revivers of the Land of Palestine, Ramallah and Al-Bireh Health Directorate, Al Kasaba Theater, Ashtar Theater, Agricultural Development Association, A.M. Qattan Foundation, Palestinian Medical Relief Society, Juzoor for Health and Social Development, Star Mountain Mental Disability Rehabilitation Center, and the Environmental Education Center- Beit Jala.
